Tea Hat

Tea hat, from the moment of its inception has been designated as the symbol of aristocracy. Tea hat is considered as an important accessory among the royal and aristocratic class and usually worn at tea parties and garden parties.

The popularity of the tea hat reached its zenith during the Victorian era, though this type of hats were available in the pre Victorian age. Tea parties or garden parties were quite common among the affluent society at this time. Dress and accessories of the royal ladies were the center of attraction. The ladies belonging to aristocratic class paid enough attention to this type of hats, without which they were considered to be unladylike. The fashionable tea hat made their attire complete and graceful.

The Victorian tea hats were quite large and were embellished with colorful laces, ribbons, artificial fruits specially grapes, artificial flowers, birds and also feathers. The hats were made of straw and a drape was attached, which symbolized modesty. In 1860, the tea hat was adorned with round or oval bonnets. The design of the tea hats changed with time but their popularity was still retained. Silk and velvet tea hat also emerged and became common with the affluent class.

Victorian tea hats were large in size and sometimes had diameter of about 20 inches. The lavish tea hats possessed white horse hair with purple or green silk attached with it. Golden tea hat with satin band was quite popular at that time. Hat with ostrich feathers and soft colored bow appearing like a cascade reaching the neck were common in the Victorian age.

Tea hat was the important part of an aristocratic lady's attire during the Edwardian age. The gorgeous hats with red roses or colored satin were in vogue. A simple ivory white hat with golden ribbon was the mark of royalty and also sophistication. With time the design of the tea hat underwent a gradual change. An elegant black Titanic tea hat, a gorgeous red tea hat, a royal purple tea hat, a simple sophisticated tea hat and a beautiful white tea hat adorned with off white laces and roses were in fashion.

In the recent times the tradition of wearing tea hat during the garden parties have declined. But the tea hat always remain a favorite accessory for various fashion shows. Fashion designer often make innovations with the traditional tea hat. Such hats secure the attention of the viewers and invite special praise from them.
