Fedora

Hats come in various sizes and shapes. These hats have different origins and history and have undergone modifications to suite the modern day man. But the essence and primary design of the hat remains the same. Hat sizes comes in small, medium, large and extra large where as others actually have a number rating for a more accurate fit. Different types of hats are differentiated by the design and structure of different parts of the hat. The crown, brim, sweatband, and hatband are deterministic characters of a hat. Some examples of different types of hats are Boater, Bowler, Cowboy, Derby, Porkpie, Tea hat, Top hat, Ushanka and Fez hat. The Fedora hat is a well known and widely popular type of hat. It is made of soft felt and has a long crease lengthwise along the crown with both the sides in front pinched. These features form the defining characters of the Fedora hat. Since the early 19th Century this piece of headgear has been used in the upper-class category. Even though Fedora were made from felt, the straw and twill versions are also called Fedora.

The origin of the word fedora comes from the play by Victorien Sardou in 1882. The name of the heroin was Princess Fedora and hence the hat she wore became known as the Fedora hat. During the 20th Century, the hat became very popular in the urban areas because of its stylishness and its ability to protect the head from wind and rain. It could also be rolled up and tucked away when not required. The Fedora hat was also extensively used by gangsters and detectives alike and the tilt of the head often hid half the head of the wearer. The Fedora hat is perhaps the most varied of all the hats. It has a huge variety of style and comes in all colors, the most popular being black, grey, brown and tan. There was a time in the United States where the Fedora hat became part of the formal attire and businessmen always wore them while working. Even in the movies showing gangsters and detectives, the Fedora hat was always part of the attire. A trench coat was frequently matched with the Fedora hat in Hollywood movies when enacting the roles of tough guys. The best known movies of the west which displays the Fedora hat prominently is the Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon.

Just like most other hats, Fedora is no longer used for its original purpose; instead it is used solely for its stylishness and still commands a large share of the market because of its design. This comeback popularity of the Fedora hat happened around the year 2000. The Jews started to popularize it during that time and now it is considered a good fashion accessory. The Fedora hat also had its etiquette. While removing the hat one had to grasp the crown part first. During strong winds it was acceptable to use the ?wind trolley? and was used in high class styled Fedora hats.
