George Lock and James Locks are known to be the designers of the bowler hats. With design of Locks the hat makers William and Thomas Bowler created the first bowler hat for the 2nd Earl of Leicester. During its creation these hats were known by the name of iron hats but later it came to be known as bowler hats.

The bowler hats are generally hard as to protect your head when you are on a horseback. However, you will also find another theory about the making of bowler hats. According to some bowler hats were made for protection of the gamekeepers of the northern Norfolk.

Popularity of bowler hats:

The bowler hats were at its height of popularity by the end of the 19th century. Most of the elite people of the upper class society used the bowler hats as the sign of aristocracy. However, the popularity of these hats were not limited only to the aristocratic class but the bowler hats were equally favorite and were in use among the working class people of the 19th century.

However, use of bowler hats also symbolized dual meanings. Throughout many parts of England usage of bowler hats act as the symbol of professional servants. Again bowler hats also signified some typical professions in England. Generally, bowler hats are worn by some professionals like government officials, bankers, stock brokers and lawyers.

Bowler hats are known by its different names. Apart from Derby and billycock the hats are also called as Melone hats throughout Germany and by the name of chapeau melon in France.

Along with some famous persons there are also some top fictional characters who had used bowler hats. Among the known personalities who had worn the bowler hats are Lou Costello, Matthew Beard, Moon Mullins, Charlie Chaplin, Orville & Wilbur Wright, Lucius Beebe and Ian Anderson.
